Ole and Johanna Berg

Ole Berg
Johanna Berg

Ole Olsen Berg was born July 16, 1822 at the Boritsu Berg farm, Tolga parish, Hedmark, Norway. His mother was Marit Eriksdatter Berg, born January 29, 1799 at Boritsu Berg. Marit's ancestors go back to the first recorded farmers of the Berg farm in the early 1600's. Marit was not married to Ole's father, Ole Estensen Kotmo. Ole was raised by his mother and her family at the Berg farm and thus carried the Berg name. Ole's father, Ole Estensen Kotmo, was born in 1781 at the Kotmo farm in Tolga. Ole Estensen Kotmo also fathered several other illegitimate children, but was never married and lived to be 87 years old. Ole Olsen Berg left Berg in 1844 to perform his military service in Trondheim. Ancestor database

Johanna Jonsdatter was born June 6, 1827 at the Loe farm, Meldalen parish, Sør Trøndelag, Norway, which is near Trondheim. She had a twin brother, Thore Jonsen. Their parents were Jon Olsen Mjøen and Ane Jonsdatter Mogsetrønningen, both of farms in Meldal. After Johanna and Thore were born, the family moved to another farm in Meldal called Haldoslette, which is where Johanna and Thore were raised. Johanna's twin brother later moved to a farm called Dahl in Rindalen, Møre og Romsdal, Norway, and when he came to America, he took Dahl as his surname. Thus the Bergs are related to the Dahls who settled primarily in Claresholm, Alberta, Canada. Johanna left Meldal for Trondheim in 1849. Ancestor database

Ole and Johanna Berg were married on April 13, 1851 in the famous Nidaros Domkirke in Trondheim, Sør Trøndelag, Norway. They left Trondheim a few days later and moved to Tromsø in Northern Norway, where their first two children, Martin Anton and Ollafine Johanna, were born. Around 1855 they moved back to the Trondheim area and lived on the Nardo farm in Strinden parish, where Marie, Thorvale (my ancestor), and Anna Berg were born. By 1865 they had moved to the city of Trondheim, where their youngest son, John Berg was born. They are found in Trondheim on the 1865 Norwegian Census. According to family history, Ole and his oldest son Martin went to America in 1865. Recently, I have found their emigration from Trondheim to America via Quebec on Digitalarkivet on July 29, 1868. They were joined by Johanna and the rest of the children in 1870. They settled first in Menominee township, Dunn County, Wisconsin. Ole and Johanna moved to Ashland, Wisconsin in 1884. Ole died in Ashland in 1888, and Johanna died in Ashland in 1908.
