Thorvale Olsen Berg was born September 8, 1858 on the Nardo farm in Strinden parish (Lade sogn), Sør Trøndelag, Norway, just outside of Trondheim. His parents were Ole Olsen Berg and Johanna Jonsdatter. He came to America in about 1870 with his mother and siblings. In 1880 he can be found on the census of Norwegians in Wisconsin, living with his oldest brother Martin and his family.
Gertrude Jonsdatter Ottem was born March 18, 1862 on the Ottemsløkken farm in Sunndalen, Møre og Romsdal, Norway. Her parents were Jon Pedersen Ottemsløkken and Olaug Larsdatter Gjøra. Gertrude came to America in 1882, along with several of her siblings. Ancestor database for Gertrude Ottem.
Thorvale and Gertrude were married July 19, 1884 in Ashland, Wisconsin. They moved to Cloquet, Minnesota and then to Little Falls, Minnesota. T.O.Berg, as he was known, was the supervisor of Pine Tree Mills in Little Falls. T.O. and Gertrude Berg had six children: Oliver, Henry, Edward, Alice, Nora, and Mabel. Gertrude died March 1, 1926 in Little Falls, and T.O. Berg died January 13, 1937 in Minneapolis.
